There are three versions about the origin of the name of the village of Ververonda or otherwise Ververuda. Most prevalent today is the one referring to the type of wild shrub that grows most extensively in the area, and from which it is said that some indelible dye, also known as berberine, can be produced. The export of expensive purple, precious oil, its famous wine but above all the important location of the Acropolis and Porto Heli’s natural harbor made the area very famous.
In the eastern part of Verberonta Bay, there is the homonymous lagoon, which is separated from the open sea by a narrow strip of land and communicates with the open sea of the bay with two openings.
